| Why Are They Famous? The Hayden Christensen Quiz By Trevor Thompson May 18, 2005
As you might imagine, there are dozens of fan sites dedicated to Hayden Christensen, the hunky young actor who plays Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader in the latest installment of the Star Wars series, Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. I looked at three. One is affectionately named, "Loving Hayden," another is named "Desiring Hayden," and the third is named, "Intoxicating — The Hayden Christensen Fanlisting." The most entertaining of the three is "Loving Hayden" because it has a five-question multiple-choice quiz. Here are the questions: 1. When he participated in Eco Challenge 2002, what country did Hayden play for? 2. Hayden plays what in the upcoming film, Shattered Glass? 3. Hayden is said to be appearing in a film with Vince Vaughan and Wynona Rider. What is it called? 4. Hayden's youngest sister is named? 5. Where was Shattered Glass filmed? If you answer all five correctly you win a prize. I really wanted that prize, even though the nature of the prize itself was not disclosed; it was merely described teasingly as "a little Hayden treat." The first two questions were easy because I had been reading many articles on Hayden in preparation for writing this article. The second two were not, however, and I answered both incorrectly, thus ruining any chance I had of winning my little Hayden treat. In my opinion, the most frustrating and disappointing aspect of the quiz was the absence of an answer key. However upset I was at not winning the prize, I would have been satisfied had I but learned the correct answers to the questions. After all, in my mind, knowledge gained is the ultimate prize. (Knowledge lost is also a sort of prize, but the implications of the concept are outside the scope of this article series.) Even so, the experience of taking the quiz was not entirely without its rewards, for I had forgotten the thrill a multiple-choice test can provide. Even if the quiz is ridiculously simple, the surge of victory resulting from a correct answer cannot be ignored. In an effort to provide The Simon readers with such thrills, I decided to make a Hayden Christensen quiz of my own exhibiting some of the more interesting bits of information I gleaned from my readings about him. 1. Hayden beat out which of the following actors for the role of Anakin Skywalker? a) Ryan O'Neal b) Ryan Reynolds c) Ryan Phillippe d) Reese Witherspoon 2. When Hayden learned George Lucas had selected him for the role of Anakin Skywalker, he and his roommate celebrated by doing which of the following activities with toy light-sabers? a) dueling b) prodding c) masturbating d) baton twirling 3. Looking into his future as an actor, Hayden predicts his role of Anakin Skywalker will be regarded as: a) the high point of his career b) the low point of his career c) the Dark Side of his career 4. When discussing his film Shattered Glass, Hayden speaks of the effort involved in preparing the role and "finding" the character of the fact-fabricating journalist, Stephen Glass. Where did Hayden ultimately "find" him? a) in a bar b) inside himself c) in a galaxy far far away d) working as a writer for Newsweek 5. As the troubled and rebellious teen son, Sam Monroe, in the movie, Life as a House, Hayden's favorite method of masturbation is: a) one hand b) two hands c) three hands d) asphyxiation 6. Hayden's first on-camera moment was: a) when he was a ball boy during a tennis tournament in Toronto and John McEnroe almost smashed his head with a tennis ball. b) when he was playing with his balls in his role as a troubled teenager in Life as a House. c) when his stepmother played with his balls in the incestuous Fox Family Channel series Higher Ground. Answer Key: Question 1: c) Ryan Philippe — he also beat out Leonardo DiCapprio Question 2: a) dueling — his roommate was a DJ and put on the Star Wars soundtrack while they went at it with their toys. On a side note, his co-star in Revenge of the Sith, Ewan McGregor, was very impressed with Hayden's natural athleticism and skill with the light-saber on the set: "He's quite extraordinary with his moves and spins. And he puts 110 percent into it. I think he was a baton girl in a past life." Question 3: a) the high point of his career — Hayden is fine with this, so long as he is able to continue challenging himself in smaller, more dramatic movies. (Answer "c" could be argued as being correct, too.) Question 4: b) inside himself — Hayden never met Stephen Glass in real life. "For the most part, it was finding the Stephen Glass inside of me because he's not a well-known public figure. It wasn't like I was doing a Nixon impersonation where I had to get all of his little mannerisms down." In the same interview, Hayden pointed out he was not afraid of Stephen Glass and would approach him at a party if such an opportunity presented itself. Question 5: d) asphyxiation — Hayden received a Golden Globe nomination for this performance in Life as a House. Question 6: a) almost smashed in the head with a tennis ball by John McEnroe. (It was caught on television.) Hayden himself was a top junior tennis player. This appearance alone was not what catapulted him to fame, however. Instead, it was Hayden's role as a troubled teen molested by his stepmother in Higher Ground that put him on George Lucas's radar. Hopefully, you found the experience of taking the quiz as exhilarating as I predicted. As you can see, Hayden is a fascinating person, and in spite of all the information I've shared with you about Hayden, I fear we've just begun to scratch the surface of this talented young man. I wait with baited breath to see the path his career takes following the last installment of the Star Wars series.
